Keynote Speaker

Ted Henifin is a registered professional engineer in Virginia and has served as General Manager of the Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) since 2006.  As general manager, he has led HRSD through challenging times of meeting continually lower nutrient discharge limits designed to improve water quality in the Chesapeake Bay.  In response to these challenges, he developed a research group and leadership team that has led to breakthrough discoveries and implementation of new technologies that have earned HRSD a reputation as one of the leaders in the field in nutrient removal and utility management.  Most recently, he is leading HRSD in Sustainable Water Innovation for Tomorrow, SWIFT, project that will dramatically lower nutrient discharges to the Chesapeake Bay, augment an aquifer depleted from excessive withdrawals, potentially reverse regional land subsidence and mitigate flooding from sea level rise and save the region’s cities billions of dollars in stormwater infrastructure costs.  He is a graduate with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Virginia.
